Preparing the material for the Quilt/

We have been talking about all of the many steps that it takes to make a quilt.  the children are excited to begin.  I shared with them one of my many trick in preparing is to use an iron to make sure that the material is nice and flat. Introducing an iron to the children set me back a few years.  Many of the children have never heard nor seen one before.  You talk about children being very curious about this small appliance.

Safety rules were shared and the children respected the iron and took their job very serious.

They learned how to use straight pins in pinning their fabric together and the importance of making sure their fingers were safe.

Planning for the classroom quilt.

A small group of children met together to lay out a pattern for the classroom quilt.  During this time the children discussed how big the quilt will be and a color for the back ground.  Can you guess what color they picked?

An encounter with letters in Chinese

Last week during an art experience, the children started a
conversation regarding Chinese writing. We brought the
noticing back to the children where they discussed different
lines and symbols they were seeing.

We introduced a new art medium to the children- charcoal.
Here is Claire's encounter with the charcoal and paper.

Constructing a map

A small group worked in the block area to build a house car that had different rooms for a mom, dad, brother, and a baby. "Where does the car take you?"  - Teacher asked
                          "To Chicago." - children responded
"Chicago is right on my map. I have a computer map."
The children requested paper to draw their map.

The children discussed blue and yellow lines they can see on a map.
"I need black for the streets." - MG
"There are going to be some turns." -CG

Tell me about the lines. -Teacher
"Go straight, then left, then there is a loopty loop, and then at the swimming pool." -CG
"It takes you to restaurants, houses, or the bakery." -CG
Directions to get to the bakery:
"Straight, turn up, double, loopty loop, and then straight to get to the bakery shop." -MG
                                        Below are the loopty loops:

What does this mean?

C.D. spent a portion of his morning working in our cozy
writing nook. Without distraction, he used pencil and paper to
create the image below. As we continue to study communication,
what does the image mean below?!

Conference Meeting

The children met in the conference room to share about a few concerns with game. They worked together to solve the problem and were excited to share with the class.

"That's pretty cool. It made a rainbow."

We did an experiment this morning using oil, water, and food coloring.
Ask your children to tell you about it.
