I Dream To Be...

In class we read the book I Dream To Be, by Rebecca T. Clark. The story was about an African American girl who loves to dream.  She would share her dreams with her mother and her mother suggested that she start to write her dreams in a journal.  So today, we started to dream about what we would like to be.

Here are two of the dreams that I heard about in the classroom.

I dream to be a teacher.  I imagine that I would wear a name tag.  I imagine that I would teach kids to sing songs.  As a teacher, I would love children.  Cora

I dream to be a police officer.  I imagine that I would put robbers in jail.  I imagine that I would pull cars over and give a ticket if they were speeding.  As a police officer I would keep people safe. Patrick

The children want to make a book out of their dreams.  When all have had a chance to dream, we will share the book.

We Finished the Baby Doll Dress/Gown!

I know that it has been some while since we have shared about our sewing adventure.  The children have been busy with working on other projects in the classroom.  Our last step with the dolls dress/gown is altering the garment to fit.  So today, the children are were working on adjusting the dress/gown to fit the babydoll better.

They worked on trimming the length of the dress/gown and readjusted the straps so that they
would stay on the baby's shoulders.

Here is the finished dress/gown!

"The baby looks beautiful!"  said Catherine
"I like her dress."  said Morgan

Onto our next sewing project.  Tune in as Morgan shares how can take an old dress and turn it into a diaper bag for our babydolls.

"Is today Thursday?" "Yes," said Ms. Juanita.  "It's Caper day!"  The children look forward to Caper day.  Today the children explored throughout the classrooms.  It is always nice to see Birch kids experimenting new adventures.

A small group of children went out to explore with the rainboots and umbrellas.

What a beautiful day in the Neighborhood!

In the Collaboratory Room the children created a neighborhood.  In their neighborhood they had a fish pond where they fished for great big fish.

As you walked down the block you come across the house that has a slide.  When you are in the house and you want to leave, you have to go down the slide.

New to the neighborhood is a house that was built with two bedrooms.  These rooms are very comfortable and have lots of room for sleeping.

And the last house in the neighborhood was built to protect the community.  It is a Fire Station.  This house has a built-in fire hose that is used to put out the fires.

What more can a neighborhood ask for?

Babydoll Gown

The children started sewing their first babydoll item.  If you remember they deconstructed an old t-shirt and used the parts as patterners to create a gown/dress for the baby doll.  They shared that they wanted to hand sew the outfit.  Each student worked on sewing part of the gown/dress.

We are half way done with the gown/dress.   We'll keep working on it and share later the finished outcome.  Some of the children think that the gown/dress is not going to work.  When asked why, they replied "it's going to be too long."  I am excited about that thought because it will lead us into how to alter and make clothing fit.
