Sign Making

Making the light atelier special for all has driven the learning in the green room.  The children want the space to be inviting and exciting for others to learn in.  The newest part to the learning is making sure our friends know what is available in the light atelier.  Sign making gives the children the opportunity to communicate with others about what's so special in the light atelier.  Here are a  few of the signs;

Light Table

Flashlights

Stacking Cups

Disco Ball

Building Castles

Shadows

Light Wall

Where to move "WILD?"

The children began work to move "WILD" outdoors this week. Our work began with
researching spaces that may/may not be safe or big enough. A small group visited
space on the hillside and the playscape. Below you can see some of the conversation:
WH- I think the grassy hill because there are more trees to hang on,
MC- I think the grassy hill because lots of benches that are hard.
CI- The playscape because it has stronger things, it's bigger.
EZ- Playscape because it has more room.
MG- Playscape because more rooms and more spaces.

"I don't think this would work because there is nothing for us to tie it too." -EZ

"There's a lot of trees. We could tie them around the trunks." -WH

"We could use the holes to string it through." -CG

"These posts are tall and straight. It's made out of wood, it's strong."- MG

"It's flat and a little bumpy." -EZ
"We could tie it to the fence." -CK

Next week, we will decide on a space that would work best. Stay tuned!!

Designing pieces for the snail

During small capers, children visited the gym along with the artist, Catherine,
to design pieces to be added to the snail sculpture that can be found on the hillside.

Catherine showed the children two different ways that they could
explore the language of clay.

One was wet clay to use different textures.

The other was a dry piece to create line drawings.

Puzzle of Rocks

Using river rocks to create a puzzle made from drawing our lines, waves, zigzag and curves  Check out what me came up with.

Making a space feel great!

Staying responsive to the children's learning and involvement in the light atelier, the children wanted to make signs of the options of materials in the area.

The children took an old light table and reinvented it with using other light sources.  A rope light gave off the most light.

"I'm gonna follow you." -LC

We took a trip to the "Forest" this morning. The children
played hide and seek and recalled secret spaces that they
have found on previous trips.

The children discussed directions as they moved throughout the Forest.

"I started right here and climbed over here. You get a turn to go this way." -LC
"I'm going to a secret place."
"I'm turning this way." -CD
"I have to take a shortcut." -WH
"Let's go back this way." -LC

Caper Time Learning

Caper time is a great part of the learning that takes place here at the AFC.  It is amazing to see how other children view the learning of what is taking place in the green room.  One thing that stays constant, is that children have a unique sense of learning and how they want to learn.  They bring their thoughts and ideas and make what you have been studying more clear with their understandings.  I love learning from all our caper friends.
