Why is WG special to you??

Throughout the year, children have been trying to make sense of the world and their place in it. We continue to discover connections using the Webster Groves map. We have begun work on a book of places that are special to us in Webster Groves.

PW says, " I love Rocketship Park because I play baseball there."

CS says, "I love Jets pizza- we eat the cheese and pepperoni pizza at our house. I like the sticks with the spicy sauce."

RJ says, "We go to Weber's to eat pizza and play the games there. I drew the baseball game."

MP says, "My family and I like to go to the pool."

LB says, "We go to Roadhouse. My brother and I like the Mac and Cheese."

We will continue to work on the pages for our book and will then begin to talk about the big city because that is where Ms. Heather lives. And all the places we visit there.

Great time for Capers!

One of the most exciting days of the week is Caper Day.  The children love that they get the opportunity to explore the other classroom.  The children get to experience what their  peers have been investigating.  It is a great time for the children.

The children gather great knowledge and this leads to some super conversations in the classroom.

Hooray for Caper Day!

A Neighborhood

A small group of children built a hotel with the blocks. This led to a conversation about adding more buildings to a neighborhood. Unfortunately, all of the blocks had been used to build the hotel. The teacher said, "How are you going to fix that?"

CI said, "Maybe the hotel needs to be smaller and use less blocks." The teacher asked what kind of buildings you might find in a neighborhood.
CI built a grocery store.
CS built a restaurant.
MR built a hotel.

The teacher asked, "How do you know which building it is?"
CS said, "We can make signs."

Using invented spelling to write signs.

MR said, "I wonder how tall the hotel is," so the group worked together to measure the buildings.

Measurements

After their work was completed, the children used their imaginations to travel through the neighborhood.

Fun Time in the Gym!

There is nothing more fun then having some good time in the gym.  The children get to let it all out.  They can jump. crawl, roll and squeeze through things.  Using those large motor muscles helps when playing in the gym and a little help from friends make the time even greater.

Representing ideas through the language of writing

Children spent the morning gathering and collecting their ideas around the classroom with the use of writing utensils and clipboards. Some children measured objects in the classroom,
"As RJ wrote, he said, "Woo, that's a lot."

As well as each other

MR told a friend, "You are 41, how do you spell your name?"

The children recorded their findings using invented spelling to sound out words while other children wrote the numbers corresponding to the items they measured.

Another small group of children were taking food orders from their peers in the classroom.
JA's food order

DW measured a friend. He said, "She was this many," and pointed to two 3's on the measuring stick. The teacher told him that says 33 and he recorded his data.

Sewing!

More and more of the students are trying their hand at sewing.  Their ideas of what they would love to sew is growing.  We are going to have to call in some reinforcement and get help with some of the sewing.

Sewing on buttons is the highlight of the day
