Friday Fun

Happy Friday! Today we enjoyed scooping and pouring water beads in a tub and building in the block area. A group of students worked together to create an animal house for all of our animals in the classroom. They worked together to create the structure and decided that only the zoo animals could be in the animal house not the dinosaurs or the people. After building the animal house some of the class worked on creating a big ramp for cars to race around. We also played the letter and number hunt game in the classroom. We put the numbers in order from 1-20 and the letters in order from A-Z! Have a great weekend!

"We built an animal house, look!" -S
"It's an animal mall!" -A
"Only animals can go in! Not people." -T
"No dinosaurs can go in either!" -M.R.

Thursday Explorations

Good afternoon! Today we had a busy day exploring the gym and creating our own obstacle course in the hallway. We used different shaped pieces to create a long obstacle course down the side of our hallway. Some of the class pretended the floor was lava and had to walk very slow and balanced to stay on the different obstacle course pieces. We also made our own water beads in the classroom and dug small dinosaurs out of the sand. After our morning meeting we read a story about Rosa Parks and learned about what happened during the bus boycott. Ask your child what they learned about Rosa Parks! Have a great evening.

"We need to add water to make them get bigger!" -T
"Their getting bigger because they are in water. It's magic!" -S
"I can make a tornado in them. Look!" -M.R.

What do you notice?

Good afternoon! Today we enjoyed building with the big blue blocks in the collaboratory. Our class worked together to create a castle. Inside the castle built a big dance floor and played games. Some of the class also built ramps for balls to roll on and played family. In the classroom we took a virtual field trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium to watch the penguins! Each child had their own clipboard and colored pencils to draw something they noticed about the penguins. We also had a conversation about what we noticed:
"I noticed that the penguins flap their wings to shake the water off!" -A
"The penguins keep trying to fly but they can't!" -M.Y.
"They love to swim!" -F
"I've seen these penguins at the zoo!" -M.S.
"The penguins love cold water and snow!" -M.R.
"The penguins are swimming around!" -T
Ask your child about what they learned about penguins today. Have a great evening!

Snow Volcano

Good afternoon! Today we enjoyed riding bikes in the gym for the first time this school year! Everyone was excited to get a chance to ride bikes and play in the gym. Today we also did a science experiment where we made our own snow volcano! First, we tried to form the snow into the shape of a big volcano by patting it down. Next, we added baking soda and orange food coloring into the tube in the middle of the snow volcano. Last, we added white vinegar on top of the baking soda and watched the volcano erupt!
"Woah! Look at all the orange lava coming out!" -S
"The explosion is made out of lots of bubbles!" -M.Y.
"Add more so we can see it explode again!" -B
Ask your child to tell you about our snow volcano! Have a great long weekend, we will see everyone on Tuesday!

Colorful Snow

Good afternoon! Today we explored using colored water in spray paint bottles with fresh snow in a big tub. Our class noticed that when they sprayed the snow with the colored water it made the snow melt. They also noticed that they could twist the top of the spray bottles to make the bottle mist colored water or spray in the line.
"If you turn it like this it sprays like a line!" -M.S.
"The snow is starting to melt from all the water!" -M.R.
We also created our own squishy emotion balls to squeeze when we are feeling frustrated, mad, sad, or upset. Ask your child to tell you about how we made them and what they are used for. Don't forget tonight is Kindergarten information night for the district on Zoom at 6:00. Please see the link below for information on each school. Have a great evening.

Tuesday Explorations

Good afternoon! Today we tried out a new game called the letter parking lot game. During the letter parking lot game you roll a letter dice and see what letter you land on. Then you move your car down the road to the parking space with that letter. We took time to play this game and practiced our letter recognition. Some of our class also built ramps with the wooden blocks to roll our cars down. During our morning meeting we had a conversation about Black History Month and read a book about Barack Obama. I asked the class if they could tell me the names of any other important people who we celebrate during black history month.

"Kamala Harris! And George Washington Carver!" -A

"Martin Luther King!" -B

We will continue to celebrate black history month and those individuals who have helped us fight for the rights of all people. Have a great evening!

Can you build a home for the dinosaurs?

Good afternoon! Today we spent time building in the collaboratory and in the classroom. In the collaboratory our class worked hard to build different structures such as houses and spaceships! In the classroom we had a challenge of creating a home for our dinosaurs. One group of students worked together in the block area to build with wooden blocks. The other group worked on another carpet using small colorful blocks and alphabet blocks. It was great to see everyone working together and sharing their ideas about how to build each home. We also read a story called I Can Handle Angry and had a discussion about different ways we can safely handle our feelings. Have a great evening!
