Think About it Thursday

With all of the talk of restaurants your teachers knew exactly what our Think about it Thursday question was going to be today.

What is your favorite restaurant?

"Old McDonalds."

"Chick Fil-A"

"Lion's Choice"

"The Donut Shop!

"Panera"

We heard talk of lots of local favorites, as well as the best foods to get at each one.  Can you guess what YOUR child's favorite place was?

But, let's back up a day to yesterday's discussion.  What even IS a restaurant?

"It has food." JA

Oh!  Well, my refrigerator has food, so that means it's a restaurant!

We were met with a chorus of "NOOOO!"

"There has to be someone you don't know to give you the food." CG

"A place you have to GO to." RM

"There has to be stuff there." MT

Stuff?  Tell us more.

"Like a refrigerator and stuff."

"LOTS of food." ESE

"A LOT of tables." JI

"Well, our classroom has a lot of tables." Ms C

"There's not lots of food here and we need tables AND lots of food."

"People get food from a restaurant."

Oh!  I've got it!  I know a place that has LOTS of food, refrigerators, and people I don't know that give me my food.  Schnucks!

Once again we were met with a chorus of "NOOOOOOOOO!!!"

"A store is almost the same as a restaurant. There's food which is the same, and there's a checker which isn't the same." EM

"There's food on the menu written down."

"Starbucks has hot chocolate and eggy bites." HW

This began a conversation of restaurants that we know.  As we talked we wondered a bit more about the process of getting the food.  So, someone we don't know brings us the food at a table...and we just take it and leave?

"You have to pay." MS

"You ask the manager how much to buy them." JI

Wow!  Birch friends you know a LOT about restaurants.

We are so fortunate as to have SO many fabulous restaurants right within walking distance of our school.  So, on Walking Wednesday we headed out to enjoy the gorgeous weather with a purpose in mind.

What do you notice about restaurants?

As soon as we rounded the corner we began hearing cries of "I know this restaurant!"   and   "I have been there before."

We began peeking through windows to NOTICE.  What do restaurants have?

There's a fancy chandelier!  We have one of those...well...almost!

We saw tables and plates, menus and chairs through the windows.
But, there were other things we noticed that all the restaurants had that weren't inside.  These things were outside.  All of the restaurants had signs!

As we continued with our walking and peeking we came upon a window and we heard,

"There's tables in here.  That's a restaurant!" ESE
I heard you loudly declare with excitement that you had found yet another restaurant.
But...is it a restaurant?  There are lots of tables for sure, but look at them?  What is on those tables?
"Tape, and papers."
Hmmmm...nope, not a restaurant!

Some of the restaurants in our community are "inside AND outside restaurants!"

Look at those fancy decorations!  I remember CF told us the other day that is something a restaurant has.  What is on those tables?
"It's a candle!" ESE
We couldn't quite see inside it, even when we lifted up high, but we are pretty confident in our guess!

As we stood looking into this restaurant we noticed an open door and...oh my goodness!  It was a hallway that led right into a giant kitchen!
"look there's the cooker man!" GC
"He makes stuff." MT'

This restaurant has numbers on the door.  I wonder what those mean?

"They tell us when we can come there." RM

As our walk was just about finished we came upon the most exciting discovery of the morning.
"It's a hamburger restaurant!"
"It's a giant menu sign!"
"There are numbers on there."
"I was thinking they tell us how much money to pay."

It was an amazing morning of learning, discovering, noticing and sharing and we cannot wait to see what happens at OUR restaurant!
