Forest Friday

How can we make a map of the forest?

This was the big question we asked our Birch friends today.

"With sticks!" JL  What a great idea!  We created maps yesterday with markers and paper, but you can create a map out of other materials too.

As we walked up the street to the forest CF, you asked an important question.

"Is the forest part of our community?"

Wow!  What a great connection you made to our discussion the other day.  We go to the forest each week.  We walk here.  It is important to us.  I think you are right.  It IS part of our community!

Your conversation turned to wondering how you could make a map to get us to the forest.  "You take a LOT of steps straight and then you turn and you take not as many steps.  Then you take  a SLIGHT turn and then you're at our meeting tree!" CF

"This is the forest and this is our class.  We were walking walking and then we got to the forest." JA

"This is my map of the forest." EM

"I'm drawing what I found." LB
What a great idea.  How can you tell me where to find what you found?

"This is this tree right there." LB

"I'm making a map of all the things I find." LB
"These are the words.  They tell you where to go." LB
Oh!  There are directions on your map!  You have one map that tells you where to go and one map that tells you what to find.  There are two different maps of the same place!
You added so many details to your map.  I can see the meaning and importance of each and every thing you added.  Your map is very important to you!

"I'm going around and around the forest so I can find my sister!" DM
You are making a map that helps you find something VERY important to you!
What are the important parts of our forest that you can put on your map?
"Trees!"  There are SO many trees in the forest.  Which ones are you adding to your map?

"This one is medium and this one is small.  These are the berries right here." DM

ET you were very eager to create a map like your friends.  You saw your friend MT ask for a journal and pencil and you grabbed the backpack to get one too.  You LOVE the forest and run up and down each and every path.  Your map is filled with the same circles your feet travel.

"This is the map where I found my Ava." JB
You drew a journal FILLED with maps that showed all of the paths you went on in search of "your Ava."

MT, your map was FILLED with details!  You started with "the stadium"

Then you drew the way you go to get there, adding in the important landmarks around your home.  You even added me on "Ginger's porch and balance beam"
You included so many locations around your home.  Then you went back to the stadium and began adding things inside the stadium.  "This is where I get the ice cream."  You put a map within your map!

We had so many maps created today, each with their own unique focus.  We saw maps with layer after layer of details and could easily see the importance of each map in your drawings.

We cannot wait to continue to explore more!

Birch families, we could use your help too!  If you have any maps at your homes that you could gift to our study we would be very grateful.  Zoo maps, amusement park maps, parks of camp grounds, maps of other states...maps....maps...maps!
