Taking a closer look at our houses

                                    We began to take a closer look at our houses today to continue
                                   as we continue to understand our place in the world. The children
                                   traced the images of their houses onto transparency paper to prepare
                                   for a provocation in the future.

"My room is over there behind the trees." CS 

"My brick chimney is stuck in the trees."
"That's my doorbell, it's connected to my house." - RJ

"If we connect the houses together, they will be neighbors next to each other." -MR 

"That's my garage stuck to my house and my big sidewalk. It has a red door. I have a neighbor named Cora- she's a baby who can walk. She's over the street." -LB

"My room is inside. I have 2 windows." - MP

                                               

An experiment with baking soda and vinegar

We presented baking soda and vinegar to the children

this morning. Observations and questions can be seen below:

                             "Why is it bubbly?"- CS

             "It just is when you mix this stuff together." -CI

                    "I made green. I used blue and yellow."- CI

                  "I'm trying to make a rainbow." 

         "Why are bubbles popping out?" - DJ

          "Where do the holes come from?" 

           "It's from the bubbles."- JB

            "It is making a sound."- PW

              "Pop, pop, pop." - AB

             "It got bigger." - JA

          "It's making yellow bubbles."- LB

         "Ms. Heather, look at this rainbow." -RJ

         "Hey, look, it's so hot."- JE

Where do you want to go?

We have a large map of Webster Groves in our classroom. The children's faces show what street 

their house is on and where Ambrose is located. 

                         Some noticings have included:

               "She lives a little bit farther from school." -CS

         "I live right by Morgan. He has a dad house and a mom house." -DJ

                  "I'm doing a shortcut." -CS 

As children investigated the map, the teacher asked the question, "Tell me how you get there." 

 

          "First, I need to go straight, then right, over here, more straight, and then you turn

             that way, and then at Layla's house." -MR

    "If I turn this way, keep going straight, I go down and 

       up, up, all the way and then turn this way, train 

        tracks, and then stop right here." -CG

Discovering the Universe through a puzzle and books.

After putting together a large floor puzzle of the universe, the children read books that were about the planets.  They used the books to find the different planets.  While talking to each other, they asked  and answered questions.

Sharing

The children worked together on sharing a drawing and creating something very special. They shared their ideas and took turns on drawing the picture.  Some drew their separate pictures on the same page, while other drew one picture together.

Look how beautiful the pictures turned out.  When asked about what sharing means to them"

Ryan - "It's nice."

Lucas - "It means being nice to each other."

Melanie - "Taking turns."

Cora - "Using words."

It is true in these pictures, that sharing is all that the children stated and more.

Fire Department visit

We had a fire drill this morning. Afterwards, the firemen stayed to talk with us about what we need

to do to be safe at our house. Take time to make a plan with your family about what to do in case of

an emergency. 

Fireman Evan then put on his gear to help us not be scared. 

         Right as the firemen finished up, they got a call to go help people. 

           We got to hear the sirens as they drove off. 

 The WG Fire Department has their open house this Saturday, October 7th so be sure to stop in.   

  

Painting our clay bowls

The children painted the clay bowls- they were inspired by 

creating containers to hold the "birthday flowers." 

We added clear glaze today in order to prepare for one more firing to

make the bowls shiny. Be sure to check them out in our family area next week!!
