How much have we collected??

This morning, we walked around the school to bring the boxes for baby donations to our classroom. We wanted to take a look at what we have collected so far. 

We needed to work together doing some heavy work to move the boxes back to Birch. 

"These boxes are heavy. I'm glad I have strong muscles." - MR

                              We took a look at what was inside the boxes and classified the donations.

"Whoa, we got a lot of pacifiers."- CG

                                           We counted items both individually and as packages.

We recorded our numbers on a graph. And have stored the donated items in our family area. 

We analyzed our information. These were our findings. 

One pile of bibs and washclothes.

Only two formulas.

7 bottles of shampoo

9 bottles of lotion

7 bottles of baby Wash 

5 bottle brushes

26 packs of pacifiers

14 packs of bottles

3 boxes of diapers

11 packages of wipes

We will add to our collection next week!!

Caper Time

Caper Time is a time that the children can go and explore all of the other activities that are taking place in the other classrooms.  It is nice to hear all that the children were engaged in doing.  

Family portraits

The children began work on drawing pictures of their families. We hope to have them on display in the next couple of weeks!! 

Building with blocks

The children represented ideas through building this morning. They built a variety of structures including houses, castles, and garages. As the children finished their work, they offered explanations about how they put the blocks together. 

"First, I built the door, it's the kitchen, I put two things on top of there, I used the square to hold it up."-DC

"I'm making a tunnel."- AB

"Look how tall my building is."- MP

"I stacked some rectangles and squares."- CS

"First, I started with the ground and then I got some squares." -JE

"I added 3 blocks, this is the top of my house."- AK

"These are my stairs, that is the roof and the door." - RJ

Let the Donations Begin!

Birch is all set for the big Baby Donation!  Today the children made signs for the donation stations.

The children took the posters  along with the boxes and placed them in the hallway.  Along the way the children were stop and asked about what they were working on.  They shared all about the baby donation and how the boxes were going to be used for the donations.

We are all set!  Let the Donations begin!

Continuing with our map investigation

The big map of Webster Groves is displayed in our classroom. Children continue to have conversations about where they live as well as their friends. So we took a walk to another friend's house. We didn't tell them where we were going, but offered directions as we walked. 

These were some of the intersections we passed. 

As we began to turn onto Portland Terrace, JB said, "I live on that street."

It was a chilly day for a walk. 

Thanks to all of you for sending in your pictures of your home. We have added them to our block area. During small capers, children used the map that was created out of tape a few weeks ago with their houses. Children labeled the tape with the street names where they live. 

 Other children created models of their houses including a garage, sidewalks, and the people who live in their house.

Sharing about the baby items!

The children took time to start sharing with friends and staff about what Birch would like to do for the babies that were affected by the storms.  The children made fliers and set out to share with their peers doing Small capers.

This morning a few more friends went around to the different classrooms and talked with their peers about helping Birch in collecting baby items for Nurses for Newborns.  Everyone was so excited to help.

Everyone here a AFC is all aboard.  Their next step is get the word out to the families of AFC.  Look for an email to come soon with more information about how this collection is going to pull together.
