Bug Homes

Today, we continued our study of spring and dived into exploring bug homes.
Inside, children were exploring what makes a bug home.
Before we began, we met at the carpet and asked the students...
"What makes a bug home?"

Some explored the question...
"How can you draw a bug home?"

Ms. Riann:  Tell me about what you have drawn so far.

B:  I'm making ants on a log.
Ms. Riann:  What are those ants doing?
B:  They are crawling on the log?
Ms. Riann:  Is that a home for ants?
B:  Yeah, they live under the log. You're going to see some going under the log.
Ms. Riann:  Are there other bugs that live inside, under, or around the log?

E:  This is a grasshopper.
Ms. Riann:  Oh, you drew a grasshopper! What kind of home does a grasshopper have?
B:  Ahh... the grass.
E:  I don't know.

Ms. Riann:  What are you drawing S?
S:  I'm drawing a spider web and an ant.

Ms. Riann:  What did you draw C?
C:  It's an ant home with the sun up there and this is a big log.

Ms. Riann:  What are you drawing now, B?
B:  I'm adding worm homes.
Ms. Riann:  What kind of home do worms have?
B:  There's a lot on the snail side. There's a lot of ants and worms over there.

Meanwhile, outside children were investigating bugs and adventuring...

It was a perfect day to use scissors with the grass since it hasn't been cut yet. Children were creating a bug home with different materials on the playscape while working together.
