Our makerspace got a bit of a change today. We have been creating and making plans with recyclable materials to see what we might create. Today we shifted to more of a tinkering table. These materials were new to all of our friends and they were a instant hit!
As soon as we opened our space friends eagerly ran - yes, actually RAN - over to the table to investigate.
We saw children picking up materials and turning them all around. Materials were spun, twisted, and looked at from every angle. Friends gathered several materials and began to notice how they might be able to connect. Would this fit in that hole? Does this hook onto that? Can I put this end in to that one?
Exploring spatial awareness through tinkering was happening all around us!
CW you put these two materials together and then noticed that there was a tool that could help you. You used those strong finger muscles and twist-twist-twisted!
I you came right over from the Sycamore room and were SO excited to show us how you are an engineer.
"This is a wrench." I
It sure is! What can you do with that? I wondered.
"I'm going to fix a car."
Hmmm..do we have a car?
"Well, I can build one! This can be the horn." I
CF you were SO excited by all of the new materials. You collected lots of pieces that were round and spent a lot of time trying to figure out how they might fit together. Your brain was really working hard!
RM You were trying hard to figure out how to attach some of the materials.
"I'm using this like a hammer." RM
I see you are trying to connect some parts. Do you think there is anything on the table that might help?
"What is this?" RM
That's a great question What do you think it might do for us? How can it help us?
While answering the question outright might have been "easier" we would have lost the opportunity to explore and look closely. We would have missed noticing the different parts of the tool an the materials we were working with.
"There is a square part on the end." RM
There IS! I wonder how that makes this the right tool to help us?
RM you were pretty sure that tool was meant to go through all of the holes on the peg board. But...did that help us connect the parts? Not really.
Your friend CW was next to us and I remembered that she had been using a tool just like this. CW can you help your friend? How might you use this tool?
Wow CG you are working on something with great focus.
"I'm making a table. But it's not going really well." CG
C you made me laugh with this statement! I know exactly how you feel every time I go to Ikea!
The Wish Tree is a beautiful story that we read earlier in the week. Our friends are still eager to continue wrapping our branches in beautiful tape. What would happen if we paired that with this book and some paper?
"I wish for a new car." AD "I wish for one of those." MT
RM you wished that the rain would be snow!
We continue to add and grow our magnet exploration space.
