Portrait explorations

Last week we began an ongoing study of self portraits.  Today we added a new layer of focus to our portraits.  We printed each friend's photo and placed them inside sheet protectors.  What would our friends do?  What would happen when we paired this invitation with an amazing art image projected onto our wall?

What would we see?

    What would we hear?

           What would we say?

                What would we do?

Immediately the Birch friends began eagerly searching for their own images.

"I made my glasses and they are even the same color!" RM

"I made a circle face." JL                         "This is me!  I look HILARIOUS!" MS

MT you traced every single detail of your picture!

"I made lipstick and my eyes!" PS

l

The students were all so focused on tracing each and every detail of their faces.  There were eyes, noses, lips, ears, and hair.
It quickly became evident that these portraits looked "funny".
Our dry erase markers were red, blue, green, red.  People are NOT those colors!
The humor of the colors quickly turned into something else.
We saw friends adding beards, mustaches, and even "reindeer antlers" to their friends faces!

"Look!  It's funny!" AS

"I turned CW into a reindeer!"

The Birch friends absolutely LOVED this invitation to explore self portraits.

But...what about that giant portrait on the wall?
Although our friends absolutely noticed it, they were so focused on their work that they didn't give it much attention today.  And that is absolutely okay!  Today was a day of free exploration.  Self expression.  Creativity and joy.  And that lends itself perfectly to the path we will take tomorrow!
Stay tuned!
