The fence

The children were using some different builders in the classroom. As a provocation, a question was asked to the children, "How can you keep the balls from rolling all over the classroom?"

The children began measuring the builders in the classroom. 

                 "What are you doing?" - teacher asked

"We are measuring to see how big the fence needs to be." - RJ 

                           The children recorded their findings.

                        "It needs to be 7 size." -CG 

                       CG was referring to 7 rulers long.

The children began searching for objects in the classroom that were the same size as a ruler. 

CG began to fit blocks together and noticed they were the same size.

After she put together seven pieces, she said, "That's not big enough." 

"Maybe it is twelve." She began to add more pieces. "I need one more."

We had to pause our work for lunch. Stay tuned as we will revisit the fence.

Making connections

The children have been making connections of how different shapes and lines fit together. 

Here are some representations from today:

         Demonstrating knowledge of patterns

       And patterns using different writing materials

Designing with Lights!

I wonder what we are going to bake in the kitchen...

       A small group of children visited the kitchen atelier. We used the pans seen below. 

                When asked, "What are we using these ingredients and pan for?" 

                  Guesses included pie, brownies, cookies, and cinnamon rolls

    Sugar, flour, eggs, salt, baking soda, bananas, and baking soda were also on the table.

As people came into the kitchen, everyone asked what we were making. The children had not 

yet figured it out. 

                             We began to mix our ingredients

"I think it is done. It is starting to turn brown." -NZ

Before lunch, we had a class discussion about the experience in the kitchen. And what kind of 

pan we used- the loaf pan. And what was made- banana bread

            What shape is it? - teacher asked

 

               Rectangle- loaf pan, Circle- pie pan, Another rectangle- cookie sheet

                            "I have had circle bread like a ball." -MG

                            "I have had triangle bread. And squares."

Forest Monday

As we mentioned in the Friday e-mail, we visit the Forest at 

the Bird Sanctuary with our friends in the Brown Room.

Please be sure to dress your children in appropriate clothing 

and tennis shoes.
