Hello and happy Monday! We hope you all had a restful weekend. We know that many of you are still trying to work while your child/ children are home. We would like to share some ideas and tips on independent play activities. I would begin by setting up two or three different activities so that when they are ready to move on from one activity, another activity is ready to go. Hopefully this limits the interruptions.
As a rule of thumb, we always have at least one sensory activity out. Find a large tub or Rubbermaid bin. In the tub put different cups, scoops, measuring cups, pitchers- whatever you can find. Then add a little bit of water to each cup. The kids will love to pour, dump, and scoop water in and out of the items. We always place a towel under the tub to catch the water that will spill out. (This is a great activity to take outside when possible).
Set up a block challenge. No blocks? Use cups, shoe boxes, couch cushions and pillows, whatever you have. The kids will think it's funny to use different materials than they are used to and may attend to this a little longer. Have them build a structure for their animals or favorite toy. How many can they fit in that house, castle, cave, ship…?
Set up a little art space. Put some paper out with markers or crayons. Have them draw somebody a special picture. I know at my house we are making lots of pictures for my grandma, the kids “Great Granny”, who we are really missing but keeping safe by staying away.
Hope these help!
