Welcome to Virtual Learning!

Friday, March 27th

Hello all and welcome to our first “distance learning” blog! We are going to start by giving you a variety of activities to do with your child. The activities we send out are just suggestions on continuing your child’s learning.

Social Story
Attached is a great social story as to why we are not in school right now. This is a great resource to read with your child if they have questions and wonderings as to why we are not in school.

Morning Meeting:
In the Birch Room, we begin our morning meetings by singing/asking each child how they are feeling. We give the child time to express and explain their emotion (they usually give a thumbs up for “feeling good,” thumbs in the middle for feeling “okay,” and thumbs down for “not okay”). Your child is welcome to “perform” their morning meeting with family members and/or stuffed animals. Then we practice our deep breathing. Have your child share what breath they would like to do and have them teach you and any other family members. We take a minimum of three breaths. Some children have created their own breaths that they might want to share. Everyone can practice some deep breathing during these crazy times. Here is a link to our deep breathing breaths: https://drive.google.com/file/d/15ngI1q83hyzZEnQZsxe99Xsrb8V_CEt2/view?usp=sharing Feel free to print these out and use them at home!

Now let’s play a game! We play two games that are very popular in the classroom: “guess what’s missing” and the “shoe game.”

Guess What’s Missing:
Take a few items from your house, such as small items that can fit in your hand (lego, small block, button, cap, lid, pen, paperclip, doll accessories etc.). Place the items on a tray, table or on the ground. Have your child close their eyes and you pick one item to hide in your hand or lap. Have your child open their eyes and tell you what is missing! To make it more challenging, you can remove more than one object at a time. After a few rounds, we remove every item to see if we can remember all of the items that were shown. This is also a great game for your child to be the leader. You can switch roles or have your child teach one of their family members how to play!

Shoe Game:
Have your child choose one of their shoes (or another item in the house) for you to hide in a designated room. You can also hide several items at a time for your child. Have your child close their eyes while you hide their shoe/item somewhere in the room. Make sure the item is somewhat visible for them. This is another great game to switch roles and to have your child practice giving you clues. If they are the one hiding the item, ask your child if they can give you clues as to where they hid the item. This is a fun game with multiple players, so feel free to invite other people to play!

We are loving the pictures and videos that have been posted on the Virtual Learning Google Album and we have made comments. Please continue to post the great things you are doing at home! We miss the kids so much and are thinking of all of you! Happy learning!
