Community Kindness Cube

Today was an amazing culmination of several month's work.  Our Birch friends began with a simple frame and rolls of washi tape so long ago.  It was amazing, beautiful, and SO much fun.  It became such a preferred activity that the frame sparked the idea of an entire art cube!

The visual impact of such a large piece was breathtaking.  Our friends gasped with amazement and the size and presentation - lights, hanging from the ceiling, shadows, inside, outside.  The cube quickly became an integral part of our work.

All the while the cube was being adorned with beautiful materials we were also focusing on kindness.  Our kindness stick with special gems hanging in our room was becoming laden with symbols of the kindnesses experienced in our room.  But...how to remember what those kindnesses were?  How could we tell others?  How could they be there always to spark kindness in those around us?

As if by magic, the two paths merged and our cube became a kindness cube.  Pictures of kindness were drawn which lead to words of kindness being spelled out.  Our kindness cube grew and grew and grew, so much so that we wondered how our kindness might spill out into our community.

After much discussion and thought our Kindness cube today was moved into our foyer so our whole Ambrose community might enjoy it!

Our friends talked through every single material we might need to bring.

"Letter beads for our kindness words." GC     "Little tiles to draw our kindness pictures." EM

"The tape!" MS     "Fabric" JB

"The kindness book" JL

"The string to hang our cube." CW

"Our list!" HW

"Those little clippers." JA     "The signs" CF     "We need the cube!!!!!!" PS

"Sticks" MT     "Markers." RM

"Wire to hang the beads." JI     "We need the beads!" CG

With our materials in tow...off we went to the foyer!

We spent some time talking about what the best way to present our work to everyone would be.  Where should we place the materials?

After everything was set up we gathered for a group picture.

And then one friend lay down to look at the reflection of the cube and all of the gems of kindness in the mirror above.  Then another friend followed suit, then another, and another.

We looked up and the beautiful thing we had done and felt...

As you enter our building with your student take a moment to add your own kindness to the cube.  We are excited to watch it grow.   As one friend said,

"Our kindness will grow so big it will explode out the door!"

Yes, Birch friends, that is exactly what we wish.
