New Caterpillars

Good afternoon! Since the beginning of the school year our class has been interested in finding insects and bugs outside. Yesterday before going to the forest we found a spicebush swallowtail caterpillar in the garden area. We learned that this caterpillar has fake eyes on it to pretend to be a snake and keep predators away from it. We decided to keep this caterpillar in our bug cage to observe it and see what it does in the next couple days.

This morning we discovered something different happening with our new caterpillar. S noticed something about the caterpillar hanging from the side of the cage he said "He has some white stuff on the side of the cage!" So I asked what do you think he is doing? S replied "I think he's making a chrysalis!" F came over and said "He's making a cocoon!" "He's looking at me!" On the hillside later in the morning we found another big green caterpillar that we found out is tomato hornworm! Ask your child about our caterpillar and hornworm and what we named them.

Ms. Brittany

Can you spot our spicebush swallowtail caterpillar making his chrysalis?

We made some more maps to hunt for treasure on the hillside!
