Beads, Animals and MORE BIRDS!

What a rainy day it has been today! This morning began by having a conversation about our bird feeder hanging outside of our window. The students noticed how there is a big whole in the bottle and all of the seeds are gone! A lot of the students think it was the squirrels that came and stole the birdseed and brought it back to their home. Some students shared how they think the squirrels ate the seed. The conversation led to talking about how to stop the squirrels from eating the seeds. One student suggested to make two feeders...one for the squirrels and one for the birds. This way, they will all have food and they will not have to steal other animal food. Another friend shared how we should create a squirrel trap near the birdfeeder. Once the squirrel is trapped, they want to release it into the forest.

After this discussion, we started to make choices in the classroom. Some friends observed a picture of a bird and drew their noticings. A group of students played a counting game with materials at the light table. The class went to the gym for some movement and exercise time. When we returned to the classroom, we created different habitats for our play animals. The students built three different habitats. They used classroom materials to create an ocean, a farm and the desert or the "outlands."

 

 

Other friends visited the art area in the classroom and created the same bird picture again using different materials. This time, the students used water color pencils to draw their observations and they compared and contrasted their two pictures. We read some stories and danced before lunchtime.
