Nature walk

Hello and happy Friday! We were able to get outside today and take a lovely walk! The students had a lot of energy and were so excited to get outside and enjoy warmer weather.

We walked around our neighborhood, observing things in nature and changes in downtown Webster. We noticed that a bank we have been walking by and observing throughout the school year is finally complete! The class shared their observations on how they built the bank (such as using brick) and they were excited to see the final product. As we continued our walk, we collected acorns, rocks and sticks for our classroom and to take home.

"Birch trees!"

The Birch room ended our morning by practicing "catch" and building in the collaboratory! We hope you all have a good weekend and enjoy some of the warm weather that is hopefully coming our way!

Capers with Chandelier

In capers today we worked with wire to create a collaborative chandelier. The students used beads to decorate their pieces of wire.

I loved watching these two girls string their beads. They were very intentional picking out the beads they were using. Their tiny hands were careful pinching the tiny beads onto the wire."This is the most beautiful bead."
"This is like a dream catcher. It takes all the bad dreams away."

"I'm going to be an artist when I grow up."

We will continue to work on our chandelier next week.

Connections

Good afternoon! The Birch room has been very interested in connecting materials together. Whether it's connectors, train tracks, blocks, plus-plus toys or leggos...we are building and connecting! Take a look at some of their work this morning!

Zooming in...
Two students began to build the connectors together. They shared that it was "a giraffe's neck" and wanted to see how tall they could make their creation.

Another friend connected pieces and shared how his creation "is a monkey's tail. Monkey tails' are very long."

As the building continued, other friends came over and decided to build their own creations.

Another student joined the play area and began to make the connectors as long as the table. She worked on connecting the pieces and stood her tower up, saying "it's as tall as my mouth!"

After reaching this accomplishment, she shared "I'm going to make it as tall as myself!" She continued this challenge, checking the height of her creation, comparing it to her own height. Once she reached her height, she realized she needed some help keeping the tower up. Coincidentally, other friends joined in on the play, helping her hold the tower of connectors.

As they worked together, they decided to make the tower as tall as the ceiling. They asked themselves, "how are we going to get it all the way up there?" One student shared his idea saying, "Ms. Susie can stand on the table and we can hand her the pieces." Other friends began to build a stool out of classroom blocks.

After building as high as they could reach, the tower fell to the ground, yet the students were excited about their accomplishment. Way to work hard and work together, Birch friends!

Biscuits Day

With the help of Ms. Katie we made our biscuits today! I love going to the kitchen with the kids because it makes me get out of my comfort zone.  (I am not one to bake or cook :-) ) First we had to measure all our dry ingredients together.  We learned that with baking you have to have exact measurements or it won't turn out right. "It's like science"

Once the dry ingredients were mixed we had to rub in the fat.  "I'm like a real baker!"

We really appreciate Ms. Katie's help and expertise in our cooking experiences. Then we had to cut the biscuits with a biscuit cutter.

"I know how to do this.  I made biscuits with my mom."

All done! Time to enjoy with our jelly!
