When children are learning to recognize letters, a great place to start is their name! This is what they see most often and are more likely to be interested in these letters. Once they know the letters in their name, children start to recognize those letters all around them!
Today, in small groups, children put together their name puzzles and we talked about their special letter (the first letter of their name). M noticed that some of the letters are "smaller than my big name".
Others mixed up their name and tried reading it wrong and fixed it. This tells us that they are able to experiment with letter sounds and know their name.
At another table, students had the playdoh letters out and were stamping letters in their name. C said, "This is my special letter C and one of my other letters, O". Children were feeling a sense of pride being able to see letters they know and identify them.
Throughout the small group time in the morning, we set up a small word opportunity: Animals on a Farm. There was a barn with horses, pigs in a pig pen and goats in a hill. Quickly this transformed into a farm that is moving. O made a "animal tractor" to take the animals to their new farm.
Exploring a small word set up is something new for children in our room. We are working on playing within our environment.
